Demand for structural steel for house building is particularly high as residential construction continues to lead UK activity – topping the table in the latest IHS Markit/CIPS UK Construction PMI again this month.
According to the survey, this has increase material costs and extended lead times from many suppliers, although at James Dunkerley we work hard to make sure we have steel beams, columns and sections in stock and ready for transport when you need them.
Duncan Brock, group director at CIPS, said: “With the fastest rise in new orders since May 2017, it appears the brakes are off for the construction sector.”
“The pressure was on [in June] to build up stocks of materials rising in price and becoming more scarce. This resulted in a heavy impact on suppliers unable to keep pace as deliveries became laboured and purchasing managers were at their busiest for two and a half years,” he added.
